Are graven images and false gods the same thing? if not then why do christians allow little figurines?

according to the 10 commandments youre not to carve any graven image. why do christians have them? Are graven images and false gods the same thing? if not then why do christians allow little figurines?
There are Christians that reject all images of God or heavenly creatures.

The Puritans generally had bare churches....it was not by accident, or for lack of resources. Are graven images and false gods the same thing? if not then why do christians allow little figurines?
The ten commandments are good, but if salvation came by them, we'd all perish. Thank God for Jesus the Christ.

Personally, I don't have them save a cross neckchain which was my grandfather's. I do have some pictures depicting our Lord though. I try to remind myself that these pictures are simply artistic concepts as I doubt any of the artists have seen His face. Strange, come to think of it that I don't have anything more - very unusual.
We don't worship the figurines, therefore, they are not gods or idols any more than the Statue of Liberty is a god or an idol.
I don't allow such in my home. Any object used in worship or reverence is anathema, like it or not.
Well they're two different things Graven Image are Idols. Beside I believe in the Greek and Roman gods. and they're not false gods. The greek %26lt; roman and other Pagan Gods was here first. Christian just want everybody to believe in their god because they think he the only one which isn't true. The Greek and Roman gods are real Always have been Always will be. I believe in the Greek and Roman gods. I know they're real I can sense them. Pagan had been here before Christian began. the only reason some people stop believing in them. Is because they force to. Now we have freedom of religion and People still believe in the pagan gods still this day they just keep it hidden.
True Christians do not used graven or carven images.

So Cross and Statues are not a part of Christian religion.

It is people thinking they need a proof of God's Existance.

Hebrew 11:6

You must have faith.

Romans 1:20 We can see his existance in the things he's created.

We learn about love, laughter, power, and wisdom in all of the beautiful things he's designed.

Best Wishes
I like the question; shows thought and desire to understand.

Here are but a few verses to help with this matter

1 Deuteronomy 7:5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

2 Deuteronomy 7:25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God.

3 Deuteronomy 12:3 And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.

4 2 Kings 17:41 So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children's children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.

5 2 Chronicles 33:19 His prayer also, and how God was intreated of him, and all his sins, and his trespass, and the places wherein he built high places, and set up groves and graven images, before he was humbled: behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers.

6 2 Chronicles 34:7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.

7 Psalms 78:58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

8 Psalms 97:7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.

9 Isaiah 10:10 As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

10 Isaiah 21:9 And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.

11 Isaiah 30:22 Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.

12 Isaiah 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

13 Isaiah 42:17 They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods.

14 Jeremiah 8:19 Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities?

15 Jeremiah 50:38 A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.

16 Jeremiah 51:47 Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will do judgment upon the graven images of Babylon: and her whole land shall be confounded, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.

17 Jeremiah 51:52 Wherefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will do judgment upon her graven images: and through all her land the wounded shall groan.

18 Hosea 11:2 As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.

19 Micah 1:7 And all the graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces, and all the hires thereof shall be burned with the fire, and all the idols thereof will I lay desolate: for she gathered it of the hire of an harlot, and they shall return to the hire of an harlot.

20 Micah 5:13 Thy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.

The term of grave images is in refference to any thing man places in the possition of haveing supreme power over him. God placed mankind here to have dominion and the only God we should worship is Him.

I hope this helps and May God bless you and grant you wisdom and growth in your efforts to understand His word better.
Catholics have those-NOT Christians!
Hi good question...

If we look at Numbers 21:8-9 it says...

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

Wait a second! He is making an image and that is breaking the commandment right? But God commanded him to do so. In reality, making an image of something is not a sin it is when you worship it is when it becomes a sin. Let's look at the commandment and read the whole sentence....

You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.

Making the serpent was not a sin, it was in obedience to God. However later on in the Bible we see that some started worshiping that same image and then it became a sin.

Great Bible resources...

Hope that helps!
I dont. so let them speak for themselves, dont lump all of us together.
For the same reason that some doctors smoke and some firemen have fire hazards in their home and some law enforcement officials drink and drive.

PLEASE don't ';throw the baby out with the bathwater'; just because many who proclaim to be Christians do these things......... anymore than you would assume that not driving while drunk must not be a good SOUND DOCTRINE if you saw many policemen doing it.

As a Christian having to put up with that madness, I think you and Gary (one of the answerers) are absolutely right. A blatant hypocrasy.

An ';in yo' face'; transgression.

It is in direct violation of the ten commandments and a clear cut example of trying to rationalize a transgression of the law just because everybody else does it.

Whether we worship the image or not is immaterial, since we are suppose to not even come close to appearing like or imitating that behavior.

Consider that when the recently emancipated Hebrews built a golden calf while Mose was up in the mountain rcvg the 10 commandments, THEY CONSIDERED IT IN HONOR OF THE SAME GOD WHO LED THEM OUT OF EGYPT - IN HONOR OF THE LORD. WHATEVER COULD BE WRONG WITH THAT? WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE WRONG WITH A CROSS THAT LOOKS SUSPICIOUSLY LIKE AN EGYPTIAN ANKH?

Check it out:

4And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

5And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.

%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;Ain't nothing changed in thousands of years. Here is the same flawed logic%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;:

When the children of Israel split into two separate kingdoms, namely the House of Israel (the Northern Kingdom) consisting of 10 of the 12 tribes and the House of Judah (the Southern Kingdom) consisting of the tribes of Levi and Judah, with the the King of Judah being Rehoboam and retaining Jerusalem as their capital and the king of Israel being Jeroboam..... then the king of the Northern tribe of Israel decided to do as follows:

1 Kings 12:28 (King James Version)

Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

They worshiped the gods that delivered them. Not necessarily the idols themselves. They *SO* knew better than that by then. but they skirted the issue as close they could.

As Christians, we REPRESENT Christ and as such we should be give no reason for even being accused of idolatry or any indication that we could be or might be even just skirting or barely flirting the issues.

As evidence to this evil ... they were conquered by the Assyrians, enslaved and spread throughout the earth and became forever known as the Lost Ten Tribes.

Deuteronomy 18:9 (King James Version)

When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

These tokens, charms, objects associated with worship are from ANTIQUITY and are religious artifacts no matter how one words it or seeks to rationalize or justify. A cross is a cross is a cross even from the days of ancient Egypt. Just because it is now associated with the God who delivered us means little.

We are not supposed to make graven images of ANY THING.

That's pretty self-explainatory

Here's a humorous way of putting it:

If Christ had been electrocuted, would we then wear little golden electric chairs around our neck?

The sad answer is... of course we would... because of our desire to be like everybody else over our desire to obey the God we profess to believe in. And justify in the most remarkable and creative ways. But it would not stand up in a court of law if our law were the bible. they would have to amend the law to include objects of worship as deemed essential by us.

This is classic - we are not bound by the law - that's old testament stuff.

This New Testament stuff here:

1 John 3:4

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
I do not know that Christians worship them there is a difference all crosses and things like that are a symbol Catholics worship idols and other religions Christians do not you must not be a Christian if so please think about where your soul will spend eternity
Because, we study our bible and know that the word ';graven'; is a rather loose translation of the Chaldean word ';peh-cel'; which is a carved image of an idol. A ';graven image'; is something which is worshiped or bowed down to, further clarified in Lev. 26:1.

There is nothing wrong with having a decorative statue or figurine. The problem is when people start to treat such things as special, attribute special powers to them, or do anything other than consider them a decorative carving or whatever.
Graven images are only idols IF people actually take them for actual gods.
Ex 20:4

This also means, no statues of people on earth, no pictures of your kids, nothing from the waters below (whatever that means), no one follows this commandment literally.
BECAUSE THEY ARE HYPOCRITES
